What is the best way to preserve the life of my new, replacement of lith-ion laptop battery?

The first one did not last long so now my replacement battery has arrived. What are some tips to extend shelf life and usage? Should I get rid of the battery old, for it is "near the end of its useful life, or should have some backup? Should I keep it off and keep the laptop plugged in when I'm home, to keep charging, or should I let the almost empty drain before recharging? Thanks for your advice!

Contrary to popular belief, batteries Lithium-ion are not subject to "Memory" as the older Ni-Cad batteries were. So there is no need for full compliance with regularity. In fact, that actually reduce the life of the battery. To prolong the life of the battery, fully charged and then remove it if the laptop is plugged to the wall. Heat is a major factor in the life of the battery and being trapped inside a laptop that is constantly producing heat is the reason why many laptop batteries have a life of 10 minutes. Keep in a cool place in your laptop bag is fine.
