Do the bettas need a heater?

OK, here is the deal. I have a 2 gallon tank( yeah yeah i know its small) and i want to get some small fish. so i think im going to get 2 bettas (both female). The room temp now ( in the summer) is 74 degrees. But i live in northern minnesota and the winnters are tough. Do i need to get a heater or will the bettas be ok in room temp?

…let me see, you are in Minnesota in the summer….where you have some colling in your house and try to keep it 74F right?……cause the wind off the water can be hot, sometimes, yes?
and in winter, of course your home is heated, it is Minnesota and cold
….so my point is, if a bowl of Bettas is kept in an inner room, your bedroom away from the window, maybe on a warm side or corner…or alternatively , in the bathroom, usually a middle room, and usually warmer…the temps should be ok, just soso though
….for now, purchase those cheap tank thermometers that stick inside the tank…and check the water
….when you make water changes, use slightly warmer water, like 78F-80F….then watch the thermometer after that and see how it fluctuates over the next several hours, just look in on it each hour and maybe keep a log of this process in your room, as well as, the bathroom, kitchen….many possible warm spots
…and as the weather begins to cool off, later in Fall, also look in on the temps again
….you will find out where to keep it most stabile and you will begin to see if a heater is needed, as you move on into winter
….even a small inexpensive heater may be too big or long for your 2 gallon tank…so you might like to check stores over the next few weeks to see which one might fit (and how much it costs) just in case you ned to buy it later…youp have time to save up some money now
