I bought a bonsai yesterday (a ficus) and a little brown clay-like substance in it?

I know this is a good tree, because it took me another State to a place that specializes in bonsai (the study of bonsai Rosada, which is absolutely incredible BTW). However, I realized that some things are brown tree that looks and behaves like clay. It's just little stubs on the trunk, so even wondered if placed in the heel to stop growing. Thank you!
