Heater Nob
we just got a new water heater installed how do we cange the temp of the water? it seems to be set much lower?

it is an a.o smith promax electric heater

our old one always had the water pretty hot but this one even when we havent used it for like 12 hours the water is only like luke warm at best, is there like a nob or something that lets you adjust the temp?

Most residential AO Smith’s have two heating elements controlled by thermostats.
A few will have just one, but they are not as common in my area.

Remove the front access plates with a philips or nut driver, which ever is needed.

Remove the Styrofoam cover. Some will still have fiberglass cover that you can remove.

If you have just one element, most of them will still have two access plates.
In heaters with one heating system, only the lower plate will have an thermostat and element behind it.

You’ll see a little white knob that can be turned by a regular small screwdriver. I do this all the time and usually use my thumbnail, but I’m a pro at this too, so be alert regardless how you do it.
You are working around 220 volt, so leave the little plastic guard cover in place. Stay alert.

If you turn it up to ‘c’, you’ll have lots of hot water, but the recommended setting is ‘b’, which is supposed to be 125 degrees.

If you do have a heater with two thermostats, turn them both up the same.

Since you have a new heater, the instructions to do all this is in the little book that is taped to the side of the heater.

That should do you.

BTW, AO Smith acquired State Industries, which made the better heater.
If they are making the heaters the way State makes them, it’ll last you 15 years average.

AO Smith, State, Reliance, and presently, Sears are all the same. I’m sure they make others also that have different name tags on them.

I’ve alway’s been an advocate of State Industries.
Their heaters will outlast American’s, Rheem’s, and Bradford Whites’ by years and years.
