Heater Head

How can I tell if my head gasket is blown or if it’s just my heater core?

I’ve filled the radiator and it blows heat….then pegs the temp gauge so I pull over. Check the radiator and it’s empty so I’m fairly sure it’s not the thermastat. On occasion she blows smoke from the tailpipe but not always. At idle the coolant level seems to stay the same in the radiator and it doesn’t seem to overheat. Only at speed does she get overheated. Don’t really want to replace both the heater core and head gasket unless I have to…any ideas?

sounds like the head gasket. if it was the heater core you should have a sweet smell in the car
